Michael Leonard (Born 1933)

Michael Leonard was born in Bangalore, India in 1933, and studied Graphic Design and Illustration at St. Martin’s School of Art from 1954 to 1957. He enjoyed a successful career as a freelance illustrator until, in the late 1960s a growing interest in painting gradually led to his decision to become a full-time painter. His first exhibition as a painter was held in 1972. A realist in the classical tradition, Leonard brings much finesse to his paintings and drawings. He is a portrait painter of some note and his commissioned painting of the Queen is housed in the National Portrait Gallery, London. With his remarkable skill as a draughtsman and his deep knowledge and understanding of art history, he has made a series of witty portraits in which he depicts the sitter in period costume in the style of an earlier master. The artist has had major solo exhibitions in London with Fischer Fine Art Ltd and, in later years Thomas Gibson; Bath, Retrospective with Artsite Gallery, New York with Stiebel Modern and Forum Gallery; Yale University New Haven. And in Arnhem, a Retrospective at the Gemeentemuseum. He has participated in group shows in many cities including, Darmstadt, Madrid, Ostende, Verona and a tour of Canada.
