ALLEN JONES (Born 1937)

Allen Jones was born in Southampton, England. From 1955 to 1959 he studied at Hornsey College of Art, followed by a year at the Royal College of Art, where his fellow students were David Hockney and R.B. Kitaj. He obtained a diploma in art education, and from 1961 to 1963 taught at Croydon College of Art, Chelsea School of Art, University of South Florida, University of California and Los Angeles, and in Hamburg and Berlin. During this period he also exhibited at the Paris Biennale and the John Moore’s Exhibition, Liverpool.

His fetishistic fibre-glass sculptures, in which he uses the female body as furniture, and the erotic imagery of his paintings and prints led to his designing posters, a Pirelli calendar, sculptures for Stanley Kubrick’s film A Clockwork Orange, sets for Barbet Schroeder’s film Maitresse, and in the theatre O Calcutta! and the Royal Ballet’s Signed in Red.
