Back To List of Artists

Born in St. Jean en Bray near Orleans in 1891, Henri Gaudier was only twenty three years old when he was killed in action on 5 June 1915, while fighting with the French Army on the Western Front.

During the last five years of his life, Gaudier had moved to London in 1911 aged eighteen with a Polish friend Sophie Brzeska, whose name he added to his own. He had successfully achieved recognition as a leading member of the English Vorticist Group, forged close friendships with the artist Wyndham Lewis, the poet Ezra Pound and the sculptor Jacob Epstein and was considered a sculptor and draftsman of remarkable virtuosity. He produced hundreds of remarkable drawings in pencil, pastel and watercolour.
