JESSICA DISMORR (1885 -1939)

Jessica Stewart Dismoor attended the Slade School of Art from 1902-03. She later studied art under Max Bohm at Etaples, and at the Académie de la Palette in Paris.Dismorr exhibited with J.D. Fergusson and S.J.Peploe at the Stafford Gallery, London in 1912. She showed her ‘Fauvist’ influenced paintings at the Allied Artists’ Association in 1913, the year she met Wyndham Lewis. Dismorr was a signatory to the Vorticist manifesto published in the first issue of their magazine Blast in 1914. Few of her works from this period survive. She is seen, together with Helen Saunders, the only other female member of the Vorticist group, in William Roberts’s painting The Vorticists at the Restaurant de la Tour Eiffel; Spring 1915. She exhibited with the Vorticist Group again in New York in January 1917. In 1939 she died by her own hand on 29 August, just before the onset of WWII
