Co-Authored Terrains: Demi Danka
Demi Danka is pioneering a new way of painting. For her inaugural solo show ‘Co-Authored Terrains’ with Gillian Jason Gallery, Danka presents works that are activated by light, chemistry and painterly intervention.
In ‘Co-Authored Terrains’, Demi Danka presents a body of work driven by a pioneering, time-bound process that reconfigures the relationship between painting and photography. Working with light-sensitive photographic paper, Danka employs a painterly yet chemically active technique, using brushes, pours, pressure, salt, and elemental substances to mark the emulsion directly. Danka approaches this medium not as something intrinsically linked to photography but as an independent medium in and of itself. The surface remains volatile throughout the process: reactive, responsive, and acutely sensitive to light and time. Each work unfolds under intense temporal pressure, a race against overexposure or collapse before the reactions are halted and fixed.
As Danka notes; “These surfaces are alive - they transform, reject, accept, and surrender, as do I. A duet in the act of becoming.”
