In ‘Thumb Sucking, 2024’, Dymock imagines a mythical scene set in an archipelago, inspired by the sirens of Homer’s Odyssey who lured sailors to their demise with enchanting songs. The painting features two figures: one coyly glancing over her shoulder and the other directly meeting the viewer’s gaze, enticing them closer as playful temptresses. One figure, rendered in a stony grey tone, merges with her rocky environment, while the other holds a horn, marking her as a mythical creature. The intimate gesture of thumb-sucking with a finger tracing the nose adds a soothing, childlike element of innocence, in contrast with the tone of the rest of the composition.
