This idea of hope permeating the work is reflected in sentences such as "He’s always in my arms" as well as in the choice of vivid colours pointing towards her faith in a bright future. Yet, such optimistic thoughts are counterposed to the frustration experienced at the time of painting. "I want to live. I don’t want to be under a microscope" is one of the many hints suggesting an underlying negative sentiment. Between love and hope, rage and sadness, Young portrays the full spectrum of her internal state in the eternal traction of contrasting feelings.
