A Marriage of Selves is also in conversation with Forde’s Destination Wedding. They collectively propose to the viewer’s provocations around “wake work” (Sharpe) and coming to consciousness with oneself, what has lingered and come to the past. What would it feel like to meet yourself? Her response to the exhibition proposition of a re-birth and reconstitution of value systems for producing culture in the commercial art world: a self-reflective body of work, a ‘becoming’, a speculative fiction that fuses the use of Black historical figures, critical theory, and visual culture as references to aid reimagining.
