'Wellmaidens' and 'Wellspring' draw upon Cornish legend, reflecting the artist's own family connections to Cornwall. According to the tale, maidens guarded sacred wells whose waters sustained both landscape and community. When violence was inflicted upon the women, the wells ran dry and life itself disappeared. Here, folklore reveals itself not merely as fantasy but as a symbolic ecology in which feminine guardianship, water and collective survival are inseparable. The story echoes countless traditions in which the violation of women becomes inseparable from the desecration of the natural world.
