Milan Young’s practice occupies a dynamic space between spontaneity and control, chaos and premeditation. Rooted in the legacy of Abstract Expressionism, her work embraces the element of chance, allowing the artistic gesture to guide the surface in unexpected ways. Yet, beneath this apparent freedom lies a rigorous structure: Young’s canvases are built upon deep chromatic research and a sustained thematic investigation into the complexities of the world around her. Drawing from colour theory as well as diverse cultural, social, and scientific fields, her paintings become sites of both intellectual inquiry and visceral emotion.

A key influence on Young’s work is her personal history, which finds expression in the fluctuating emotional registers of her mark-making. Each composition reflects the artist’s internal state at the time of creation, making her practice not only an aesthetic exercise but also an act of catharsis and self-exploration. This emotional dimension is reinforced by her diverse use of media: acrylic, oil, pastel, sharpie, graphite, charcoal, oil stick, and coloured pencil converge in layered and richly textured surfaces.

Milan Young (b. 1997, Maryland, US) lives and works in Maryland, USA. She exhibited in the UK for the first time in May 2022 at Eye of the Collector, London. In 2023, Young took part in multiple international group shows, including in Tel Aviv with Sharon Golan Art Projects and in Claridge's ArtSpace, London, in the exhibition 'Like Paradise', curated by the renowned Ekow Eshun. In 2024, GJG held a solo presentation of Young's work at 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, Somerset House, London and the artist was later exhibited in New York in the group show 'Codes & Colors' at Hollis Taggart.
